The makers of Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 have added another prominent name to the sequel’s expanding cast. Vidya Balan is the latest actor to be introduced as part of the film, with the announcement revealing that she will play a character named Kantha.
Directed by Nelson, Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster that brought Rajinikanth back to the action genre as retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian. The upcoming film is currently building anticipation through a series of casting announcements, with the latest reveal adding Vidya to an already sizeable ensemble.
For Vidya, the project marks a return to Tamil cinema after several years. Her most recent Tamil appearance was in H Vinoth’s Nerkonda Paarvai, where she made a cameo as Ajith Kumar’s character’s wife. The 2019 courtroom drama was her last Tamil film appearance. More recently, she was seen in Raja Shivaji, which was headlined and directed by Riteish Deshmukh.
Jailer 2 continues to expand its ensemble
Vidya joins a new set of actors who have been brought on board for the sequel. The additions include Vijay Sethupathi, Anna Rajan, Hakkim Shah, Bagavathi Perumal, Meghana Raj and Jatin Sarna. Actor Suryah is also part of the newly announced cast, adding another familiar face to Nelson’s follow-up.
The sequel will also bring back several members of the original film’s cast. Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Shivarajkumar, Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq and Vinayakan are returning for the second instalment. Shamna Kasim, meanwhile, appeared in the special song ‘Ala Bolelo’.
While the makers have been revealing the cast in stages, details about the individual characters and the story remain largely under wraps. The casting, however, points towards a considerably expanded world for the sequel, with several actors from different corners of Indian cinema coming together.
Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian
At the centre of Jailer 2 is once again Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The character was introduced in Jailer as a seemingly retired jailer whose quiet life is disrupted when his son, a police officer, goes missing while investigating an idol-smuggling network.
What begins as a family crisis eventually pulls Muthuvel Pandian back into a violent world that he had attempted to leave behind. Nelson’s film combined action with dark humour and a supporting ensemble that included several prominent guest appearances, becoming one of the major Tamil blockbusters of 2023.
The sequel is expected to take the character and his world further, although the makers have so far kept the plot details closely guarded. Jailer 2 is scheduled to release worldwide in theatres on October 15.
