Veteran Bengali actress Mithu Mukherjee has passed away from cancer at the age of 71 on September 20, 2026. The actress reportedly breathed her last at a private hospital in Mumbai.
A leading lady of Bengali cinema in the 1970s and ’80s, Mukherjee debuted at 17 with Shesh Parba, released in 1972, and was catapulted to stardom with her appearance in Marjina Abdulla. Known for her charismatic screen presence, she went on to star in classics like Mouchak, Swayamsiddha, and Ashrita.

Mithu Mukherjee was a popular face in the entertainment industry for 19 years. Notably, she kept her personal life away from the limelight. She was reportedly in a relationship with director Chandra Barot. They even collaborated on a film, Ashrita, marking Mithu’s last screen appearance in 1990. However, detailed information on their romance remains unknown for now.
Indiablooms reported that away from films, Mithu later moved to Mumbai permanently after selling her residence in Kolkata. Unlike many contemporaries who shifted to character roles or television, the veteran actress chose a life of complete privacy in Mumbai, making no public appearances and giving no interviews in her final years.
As per updates from multiple outlets, Mithu Mukherjee was severely unwell for the past year and was undergoing treatment for cancer for nearly a year. Notably, the cancer eventually led to her sudden demise on September 20, 2026. While further updates about her health battle are currently awaited, certain reports have stated that she died at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
Mithu Mukherjee was a part of multiple films throughout her career
Mithu Mukherjee was one of the most recognisable faces of Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, known for her charismatic screen presence and vivacious charm. Born in Kolkata, she entered films as a teenager. Her debut was Chitta Bose’s Bengali film Shesh Parba in the early ’70s, where she was cast opposite Shamit Bhanja.
But her real breakthrough came soon after with Dinen Gupta’s Marjina Abdulla. Playing the titular role, she was catapulted to stardom, and the film established her as a leading lady overnight. What followed was a golden run in Tollywood.
One of Mithu Mukherjee’s most remembered films was Arabinda Mukhopadhyay’s Mouchak, where she starred opposite Ranjit Mallick. The comedy became a major commercial success of the mid ‘70s and remains the title most closely associated with her. She went on to deliver a string of hits, including Nishi Kanya, Swayamsiddha, Hotel Snow Fox, Bhagyachakra, and Sandhi. During this peak, she shared the screen with Bengali legends like Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Debraj Roy, and Subhendu Chattopadhyay.
Mithu Mukherjee also made a mark in Hindi cinema in the late ‘70s. Her Bollywood debut was Dulal Guha’s Khaan Dost. She later appeared in Hindi films like Safed Jhooth, Dillagi, and Do Ladke Dono Kadke. Often described as the Rekha of Tollywood, she balanced both industries with ease.
After a brief setback in the mid ‘80s, she took a long sabbatical from the screen. She returned powerfully in the early nineties with Chandra Barot’s Ashrita, a commercial drama that became a huge success and proved to be a memorable comeback, adding to a filmography that also includes Pratima and Father.
A report by The Wall in June 2023 claims that Mithu completed her higher studies at Vivekananda Women’s College in Behala Crossroads. The report also stated that she was once the fiancée of a popular producer. However, the relationship ended for unknown reasons.
