TIRUPATI: The heart of a 38-year-old man who was declared brain dead following a road accident in Guntur was transported to Tirupati and transplanted into a 14-year-old girl at the Sri Padmavathi Children’s Heart Centre (SPCHC).
The donor’s family agreed to donate his organs, following which arrangements were made to transport the heart from Guntur to Tirupati. As no air ambulance was available, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) transport department transported the organ by road, ensuring that it reached the SPCHC in time for the transplant.
The vehicle left Guntur at around 3 pm on Sunday and reached the SPCHC at about 7 pm. Physician Assistant V. Vijay and Perfusionist Shyam Babu accompanied the heart and remained in contact with the transplant team during the journey. The heart was handed over to the SPCHC team soon after its arrival and preparations for the transplant began.
The eight-hour surgery was performed under the coordination of SPCHC Director Dr N. Srinath Reddy. Chief Cardiac Surgeon Dr Dipesh Trivedi led the surgical team, while Dr Madhu Yadav and the cardiac anaesthesia team provided support during the procedure. Doctors said the transplant was completed successfully.
TTD officials said the 14-year-old girl was under intensive post-operative monitoring, with doctors observing her condition and providing the required care.
The transplant was the 27th heart transplant performed at the SPCHC. TTD officials thanked the donor’s family for agreeing to donate his organs, which enabled the heart to be used for the transplant.
