Thanjavur:Both Tamil Nadu and Union governments should take steps to build a dam across the Cauvery at Rasimanal in Tamil Nadu and stop construction of a dam across the river at Mekedatu by the Karnataka government, said P.R. Pandian, co-ordinator of the Tamil Nadu Anaithu Vivasaya Sangangalin Orunginaippu Kuzhu, here on Monday.
He is leading a march by farmers from Poompuhar on Sunday to create awareness about construction of a dam at Rasimanal. The team reached Thanjavur on Monday morning. After garlanding the statue of Raja Raja Cholan near Big Temple, Mr Pandian told pressperasons that Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has ordered to release 6000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. One week has gone by since the order was issued. But Karnataka closed the dam three days back. Tamil Nadu government has filed a case in Supreme court against Karnataka Government, which has not obeyed the orders of both CWMA and Supreme Court.
“Delta farmers are dependent on these orders only. The Tamil Nadu Government should expedite the case in the Supreme Court,” Mr Pandian said. He said that even Karnataka farmers are against constructing dam at Mekedatu. Many of them expressed their views to us. So both Tamil Nadu and Union governments should take steps to construct a dam at Rasimanal,” said Mr Pandian.
The farmers went in procession to the railway station from the Raja Raja Cholan statue. Vijay Saravanan, Thanjavur MLA (TVK), expressed support to the farmers and spoke in favour of constructing a dam at Rasimanal.
