The Special Judge for ACB cases at Rajamahendravaram sentenced Rural Water Scheme (RWS) deputy executive engineer Gunja Ananda Babu, 59, to one year in jail and imposed a fine of `5,000 in a bribery case.
The court ordered that Ananda Babu be sentenced to an additional two months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. He was working as deputy executive engineer in the Bhimavaram sub-division at the time of the offence.
According to ACB officials, complainant Dasari Srinivas, a Class-III civil contractor from Attili village in West Godavari district, had executed eight civil contract works in the Bhimavaram RWS and Sanitation sub-division limits in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He had deposited `1.40 lakh as earnest money and security deposits for two years.
After completion of the stipulated period, Srinivas submitted eight applications and addressed a letter to the Executive Engineer, RWS, Kovvur, seeking release of the deposits.
On November 3, 2011, when Srinivas approached Ananda Babu for release of the amount, the officer allegedly demanded a bribe of `20,000 for processing the applications and recommending and forwarding them to the executive engineer.
The contractor approached ACB officials, who trapped Ananda Babu on November 4, 2011, while he was accepting the bribe. He was arrested and sent to judicial custody.
After completion of the investigation, the ACB filed a chargesheet in 2014. Ananda Babu is presently working as deputy executive engineer in the office of the chief engineer at Mangalagiri.
