Case Keenum could start for Bears at QB in Week 3 vs. Eagles

The Chicago Bears could be down to third-string quarterback Case Keenum Monday night when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

Starting quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a hamstring injury during last Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Williams collapsed on the turf during a scramble during that game, and was eventually taken to the locker room on a cart. Thankfully for Williams and the Bears, an MRI examination conducted on Monday did not uncover any sign of a tear, nor any structural knee damage, and he was diagnosed with a hamstring strain.

He is considered week-to-week at the moment, and the Bears have not ruled him out for Monday Night Football as of yet.

Williams was replaced in the fourth quarter by backup Tyson Bagent, but now there is injury concern about his status for the Eagles game. According to a report from Ian Rapoport, the backup passer is currently in concussion protocol. While he has an extra day to recover, the timeline might rule him out for Monday night’s game.

And with Williams likely out as well, that would force Ben Johnson to turn to third-string quarterback Case Keenum.

Keenum has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game since December of 2023, when he made a pair of starts for the Houston Texans late in the season. He completed 23-of-36 passes for 229 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in an overtime win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 15 of that season, and then threw a pair of interceptions the following week in a loss to the Cleveland Browns.
