Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he and friend of 30 years Woody Harrelson would sometimes be caught in fights that ended with at least one of them bleeding
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson may be good friends, or even brothers if you believe the rumours, but that hasn’t stopped them from getting into physical fights.
The two have been friends for almost 30 years, having met in 1997 whilst filming EDtv together. Over the years, a rumour has grown that they might be half-brothers, after McConaughey‘s mother joked that she “knew” Harrelson‘s father.
Whilst promoting their new show Brothers, which is based on that very rumour, McConaughey revealed that he and Harrelson would sometimes get into scrapes that left at least one of them bleeding. “Blood has been drawn,” McConaughey said. “No broken bones. Blood has been drawn though, and will be drawn again.”
Harrelson, who was also talking to Entertainment Weekly, said he and McConaughey “butt heads” often and that he had ended up with a “cracked lip” or two – at which point, his co-star revealed that he once chipped Harrelson’s tooth.
McConaughey also joked that Harrelson had “accidentally overswung” during a filmed fight and clipped him in the jaw. He laughed that it was “such a bulls*** excuse” because he “knows exactly where every part of his body is”.
But, amid all the fights and bust ups, the two are quick to make up and Harrelson added that they “f***ing love each other”, and are able to “hug it out”.
McConaughey and Harrelson have worked together a number of times over the years, with their most famous being the first season of True Detective. In the 2014 series, they played Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart, two homicide detectives revisiting a case ten years later when new evidence implicates the murderer in other unsolved disappearances.
Their new eight part series, Brothers, comes after McConaughey revealed that his mother, Kay, claimed she knew Harrelson’s father, Charles Voyde Harrelson, who was a convicted contract killer, when her son was conceived.
Speaking about the idea for the show with the Hollywood Reporter, McConaughey said: “We’d been chatting for years and it was becoming quite an entertaining narrative amongst he and I and our families every time we got together since my mum said that line.”
He added that Harrelson had pushed the idea forward because he really believed the rumour and “wants it to be true”. McConaughey even joked that if they did a DNA test that said they weren’t brothers, then Harrelson’s response would be: “That’s why you can’t trust science.”
McConaughey was born on 4 November 1969 in Uvalde, Texas. Harrelson, whose full name is Woodrow Tracy Harrelson, was born in 1961 in Midland, Texas. The two areas are over 200 miles apart, but Harrelson found out that his father was on furlough around the time that McConaughey’s parents were going through a divorce and as such, he could have started an affair with Kay McConaughey.
Despite Harrelson’s wishes, McConaughey has refused to take a DNA test as he does not want face the idea of his father, James, not really being his father. But Harrelson has also said that it doesn’t matter to him because McConaughey is “more my brother than my brothers in reality”.
