A Texas lawyer, Mariah Medina, who was previously working as a reporter, turned defence lawyer, faced humiliation in front of many in the courtroom after a judge pointed out her dressing style. Recently, she landed in an ugly situation in front of other defendants when a judge called her out and stated that her dress was inappropriate for the proceedings. The outfit was a sleeveless grey-hued shift dress that exposed her shoulders.

A Texas lawyer, Mariah Medina, claimed that a judge called her out for her dress in front of an entire courtroom. She took to her X account and shared a photo of her outfit and said that the judge considered it inappropriate for court. Mariah was standing outside the Bexar County Government building in the shared picture.
Medina was part of the court session. However, the judge called her out in front of the bench for a closer look at her dress. She added that the judge laughed at her and asked her if she believed that her dress was appropriate for a jury trial and whether she had a blazer in her car.
The controversial outfit, which Mariah wore for a jury trial, was a simple shift dress from J.Crew, and it only showed her arms. She alleged that she had worn the dress countless times without grabbing any eyeballs. She also shared the video wearing the same dress when she worked as a reporter to prove that the outfit had nothing offensive in it.
Mariah alleged that she complied with the rules of the courtroom dress code; still, she faced the humiliation. The Bexar County Criminal Court rules state that all attorneys and court officials should wear business attire, and business casual wear is acceptable if it is allowed by individual judges. In a post on X, Mariah wrote:
“This is what I was wearing today when a judge said that I was inappropriately dressed for court. It’s a dress I’ve worn on air countless times and a dress that I have worn to other courts without issue. I was confused, so I explained that it’s a shift dress…”
Mariah further stated that the way the judge addressed the matter by calling her and laughing at her was unprofessional and mean-spirited. She wrote:
“She had me come around the bench so she could see my outfit… in front of defendants and other lawyers. She laughed and asked if I really believed that my dress was appropriate for a jury trial… then asked me if I had a blazer in my car. Such a disappointing interaction and a first since licensure.
Netizens shared their thoughts on the matter
Just like Mariah, the internet was also shocked at the humiliation she received. One user on X, who was a retired lawyer with 42 years of experience and was part of 100 jury trials, revealed that the dress was fine. The user added that the judge was “being petty”, and it was out of line for her to publicly shame the lawyer. The user wrote:
“Retired lawyer. 42 years. Over 100 jury trials in state and federal courts. Dozens of oral arguments in state appellate courts and the 9th Circuit. The dress is fine. The judge was being petty. Publicly shaming you was way out of line.”
Another sided with the judge and wrote, “If a judge says it’s inappropriate to wear in their courtroom. It’s inappropriate, end of discussion.” A netizen wrote, “I read this story in the NY Post just moments ago. As a fellow trial attorney, I am shocked and disgusted that judges in the United States of America are asking women to dress as though they live in a Muslim country. What has happened to this once great country?”
