EXCLUSIVE: It’s been an eventful few months for rising star DJ Schak, with a history making Creamfields set, a huge new song release and yet more viral moments as his alter ego
DJ Schak is back and bringing a tune he says is like no other – and it’s already blowing up the streaming figures. The North East native has released his new track, Impacto, and it’s already closing in on a million streams within days of its release.
It comes off a history-making year for the rising star thanks to an epic, somewhat risky, Creamfields set. In August, he introduced the festival to a character like no other – Nanna Makina. Unsure how it would go down, Schak donned his amusing old lady mask, shoved on a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses and set out for a rave like to be remembered.
At that moment, Creamfields took notice to the Spanish originated fast-paced electronic dance music genre that is makina for the first time – and they loved it! Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Schak says: “There was about 5,000 people there. For makina, that’s ridiculous.
“I remember coming off thinking, I enjoyed that, that was good, but I was asking my videographer, ‘Was it all right?’ and he went, ‘Mate, wait till you see the footage’.”
Schak admits he knows the set was risky, but believed the time was right to unleash the genre onto a larger stage. “Obviously it was a bit of a gamble,” he says. “I was thinking, people could just like walk out, you know what I mean? So it was very risky, but I was like, ‘it’s what I want to do’, and I’m really happy and glad that I did it.”
What has followed has been a snowball effect. His set has went on to have more clicks on YouTube than a number of the festival’s main attractions this year. And he has since released his new hit Impacto.
While he burst onto the scene thanks to the huge success of his debut track, Moving All Around, Schak admits Impacto is on course to be even bigger. Speaking just four days after its release, Schak tells us: “It’s done 950,000 streams just on Spotify. But here’s one factor which is mad, it’s bigger than ‘Moving All Around’ was, currently. I checked it, and it’s currently further ahead.”
He continues: “I think one of the reasons why it’s resonated with a lot of people and they like it is because there’s no other record currently in the world that sounds like it, it’s different.”
And talking about being different, Schak has successfully built himself a rather bizarre but brilliant alter ego. Nanna Makina, who was spawned in his bedroom as a bit of fun during Covid is becoming an internet sensation. From raving behind the decks to racing along the streets on supercharged mobility scooters, it’s certainly caught the attention of those online.
Schak jokes: “Nobody else in a world of eight billion people can say they’ve driven down the Fish Quay in North Shields dressed as Super Mario with an old woman mask on, fireworks strapped to the back of a modified mobility scooter with a 125 go-kart engine…I felt like a kid. I was free.”
And it’s his alter ego he thanks for helping him rapidly grow the public’s love of makina as a genre. “What the character has been able to do, is introduce people who wouldn’t normally listen to it, because of the comical aspect,” he says.
“It’s the biggest makina’s ever been now, and Spanish DJs are even saying themselves, they’re shocked, because it was just a thing of theirs. I’m going to do my part, push it as far as possible, internationally.”
Both Schak and Nanna are set for a bumper end to the year at shows, leading up to a show in his native Newcastle. “On December, 18th at the NX in Newcastle it’s going to be me, Symmetrik, MDDLTN and obviously Nanna Makina, but we’ve also got Junkie Kid, he’s a hard techno DJ from Mexico. I think this is the first time he’s played in Newcastle…”
“[I’m] looking forward to getting him in as well, and having a good time, celebrating the journey, celebrating this moment, just enjoying it while it’s here. That’s the most important thing. When these things come about, you’ve got to take it with two hands and enjoy it.”
