Coleen and Wayne Rooney have been together for well over two decades and whilst he hasn’t been a perfect husband some things seem to have bonded them together as a new Disney+ series shows
Loyal Coleen Rooney has put up with a lot over the years – and in her family’s new documentary she admits she has considered giving Wayne the red card.
But at least for now, it seems like keeping her beloved family together – along with Wayne’s affection and ability to make her laugh, were the deciding factors in continuing the marriage. Former Manchester United footballer Wayne, 40, has cheated with other women down the years, and none of that is focused on in their new Disney+ series The Real Rooneys.
But the pain of his actions and Wayne’s late night partying and unreliability still shows signs of taking its toll at points during the 12 months of filming the family. The couple have been married since 2008 after their relationship began in their teens as Wayne became a football star.
Coleen, 40, says: “There’s times where I think ‘Is the answer to see what it’s like if we were separated?’.” She then adds: “But the we still care for each other, we still have good times. You know, we still love each other.”
At another point she tells Wayne: “It’s been a bit of a lads holiday for you, staying up all night. You can’t just keep doing what you do. It is not fair of everyone else. It is only you that can fix it because no one else is doing it. I’m just hoping that things change.”
Coleen is also shown being patient and prioritising her kids above herself almost throughout the new Disney+ show. Her main concern about going back to work after I’m A Celebrity with new fashion and advertising deals was whether the kids – and Wayne – would cope.
When he doesn’t get up to do the school run on one occasion, she admits: “You can’t always rely on Wayne. So I mostly organise everything. It’s really annoying.” He then leaves her waiting two hours outside a golf clubhouse when they are meant to be driving on romantic weekend to Scotland – but he wins her over with silly chat on the drive north.
Wayne admits: “I knew what I was doing starting stupid conversations. It’s a skill to have, annoying her and making her laugh at the same time. I’ve had a lot of practice. The doghouse manual, I’m on the third book.”
And on another occasion during filming they also sit down for a joint interview in the living room and admit they haven’t spoken in four days.
“Some days we wasn’t talking, but because it was in the diary, I wasn’t changing my date. So we were going, we were filming that day, talking or not,” Coleen said at the show’s London premiere.
Wayne admitted until he watched the show he had no idea his wife Coleen actually designed the clothes in her Primark range. He said: “I didn’t know how involved she was, and when I was watching it, I was very surprised. It was really good too.”
Coleen added: “He said ‘you actually get involved’ he thought I just put my name to things.”
Wayne himself has enjoyed a fashion makeover in recent months, dressing more smartly and having lost weight and seemingly enjoyed a makeover which helps him look his best in front of the TV cameras – and if he ends up on a rice and beans diet in the I’m A Celebrity jungle.
Insiders say he has quit nights boozing and Coleen has had a big hand in his rebrand, with his career also going from strength to strength with multiple podcast deals and lots of work as a TV pundit too.
In lighter moments in the series, Wayne admits he would like a spot on the Masked Singer or judging on Britain’s Got Talent. And he says he cries a lot these days including at things like Coronation Street.
Wayne and Coleen’s four kids are also stars of show, with their funny comments and trashing the garden by racing around in go karts.
Kai, 16; Klay, 13; Kit, 10; and Cass, eight all have their moments, and Wayne and Coleen say they want them to have similar childhood to one they had in Croxteth.
“At heart, me and Wayne are just still a couple of kids from Liverpool,” Coleen says in the show.
Explaining her reasons for doing the show, she added: “We live in this in this extraordinary world, but we are normal at the end of the day.
“We look back at the change in the kids in a year. They’ve grown up so much in a year, and some of that footage that we’ve captured, we wouldn’t have got ourselves. So it’s quite nice that we’ve got some of that to keep forever.”
