- Online criticism of celebrity’s postpartum body highlights societal pressures.
- Post-pregnancy body recovery is structural, not a cosmetic timeline.
- First year postpartum demands recovery, rehabilitation, and medical screening.
- Surgical intervention should ideally wait until natural recovery stabilizes.
Katrina Kaif stepped out in public this month, about ten months after her son was born, and a section of the internet went straight for her waistline. Not what she said. Not why she was there. Plenty of people pushed back: she’s forty, not twenty, and holding her up against women a decade younger was never a fair test.
I watched that conversation with great interest, since it comes up in my consulting room nearly every week.
Here is what I wish the conversation started with. Pregnancy is a structural thing, not a cosmetic one. Your belly stretches and strains. Connective tissue turns to liquid down the middle. Your ribs spread. Your hitching pelvis takes on a thousand pounds. Your ligaments turn to mush under the influence of hormones. Your blood supply increases by forty percent. None of this reverses on a media timeline.
The uterus takes about six weeks to return to size. Midline separation often narrows on its own somewhere between six and twelve months. Collagen renews itself in a year or more. Add sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, low iron, and the thyroid changes that are common in the first year postpartum, and you have a body that’s still functioning, not failing.

The First Year Should Be About Recovery
So the first year belongs to recovery, pelvic floor rehabilitation, breath and core retraining under supervision, walking, and adequate protein and iron. Screening for anaemia, thyroid dysfunction and postpartum depression, which remain badly under-diagnosed in India. These are unglamorous, and they matter far more than the mirror.
When women do ask me about surgical correction, my first answer is usually to wait. I prefer to assess no earlier than nine to twelve months, after breastfeeding has ended, after weight has been stable for several months, and ideally after a woman has finished having children. A great deal of what looks alarming at three months has quietly resolved by twelve.

When Medical Intervention May Be Needed
Some things will not. A true muscle separation, a hernia, or skin that has genuinely lost its recoil are mechanical problems, and no amount of core work corrects them. Saying so honestly is part of the job. So is telling the many women who need no procedure at all that they need no procedure at all.
A recovering mother is not a before-and-after photograph. She is a patient, and she deserves the patience that word implies.
