Hyderabad: In a serious incident arising out of an ancestral property dispute, Shankarpally police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly attacking his 70-year-old father with a granite stone. An attempt-to-murder case has been registered against the accused.
The case was registered on a complaint lodged by Amrodhi Anjamma, 65, of Lakshmareddygudem Village in Shankarpally, against her son Amrodhi Srinivas, 35.
According to the complaint, Srinivas had allegedly been harassing his parents for nearly three years, demanding that around five acres of ancestral agricultural land be registered in his name. Several discussions were reportedly held before elders, but the dispute continued.
The matter allegedly turned violent when Srinivas attacked his father, Amrodhi Ramulu, 70, with a granite stone. The victim sustained a serious head injury and was shifted to hospital, where he received 13 stitches.
Shankarpally police arrested Srinivas, produced him before the court after which he was remanded to judicial custody.
Following the incident, Shankarpally Inspector G. Rudvir Kumar urged senior citizens and dependent parents to immediately seek police assistance if they face harassment, threats, assault, neglect or unlawful pressure over property or finances.
Future City Police also highlighted the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Act, 2026, which provides a mechanism for financial support to eligible dependent parents, subject to the prescribed conditions and orders of the designated authority.
Under the Act, up to 15 per cent of an employee’s monthly gross salary or Rs.10,000 per month, whichever is less, may be apportioned towards the support of eligible dependent parents.
Police also reminded the public about the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which provides legal protection relating to the maintenance, welfare and protection of senior citizens.
The police cautioned that harassment, intimidation or violence against elderly parents can invite serious legal action and appealed to senior citizens to approach the nearest police station without hesitation whenever they face abuse, threats or unlawful interference with their life or property.
