Six of the 14 firefighters injured while battling a fire at a handicraft factory here were shifted to Jaipur’s SMS Hospital on Thursday after their family expressed a desire for better treatment.The six injured firefighters were transported in separate ambulances through a green corridor created by the traffic police. Traffic was halted at several points along the route to facilitate their swift movement.
Each ambulance had a doctor and a nursing staff member. Mahatma Gandhi Hospital Superintendent Fateh Singh Bhati said the six patients were shifted to Jaipur at the request of their family members.
Seven other injured firefighters continue to be admitted at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, of whom three are in critical condition and on ventilator support, Dr Bhati said.
The fire broke out at the handicraft factory in Basni on Wednesday evening and quickly intensified after chemical-filled drums caught fire. Several explosions followed, leaving the firefighters engaged in dousing the blaze with severe burn injuries.
The injured firefighters were rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. Of the 14 firefighters injured in the incident, one escaped with minor injuries, while 13 were admitted to hospital. Police have registered a case against the factory owner on the complaint of a Jodhpur Municipal Corporation fire officer.
Basni SHO Nitin Dave said an investigation had been launched to verify the ownership of the factory, its registration and other relevant documents. Police are also looking into the circumstances surrounding the fire and the explosions, he said.
