Suhail Nayyar is stepping into fresh territory with Udta Teer, and it clearly wasn’t a role he could show up for without preparation. Directed by Aakash A Kaushik and produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain under Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, the spy comedy stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles, with Suhail playing a layered spy character opposite them.
To pull off the part, Suhail committed to a full physical transformation, daily training, a protein-heavy diet, and a moustache that gives him a completely different screen presence from anything audiences have seen him in before.
Talking about the process, Suhail said, “Udta Teer gave me a chance to play a completely different, never-seen-before avatar. The character required a certain physicality, so I trained every day, changed my diet and worked towards gaining muscle for the part. The moustache added another layer to the transformation. I also worked quite a bit on the dialect because I wanted it to feel natural and rooted in the character.” He added, “Beyond the look and voice, there are a lot of layers and complexities to him, but he’s also a lot of fun. Aakash has made a really fresh spy comedy, and I’m very grateful to Guneet, Achin and Dharma Productions for trusting me with this role. Ayushmann is brilliant at what he does and just as lovely off screen. We had a great time working together.”
This isn’t unfamiliar ground for Suhail when it comes to intense, transformative roles. The actor has previously earned praise for parts in Udta Punjab, Hotel Mumbai and the espionage series Saare Jahan Se Accha: The Silent Guardians, so a spy thriller clearly plays to his strengths.
Udta Teer, which follows Ayushmann’s Bilal, a Pakistani spy who loses his memory and ends up fighting for the very side he was sent to infiltrate, releases in theatres on October 9.
