Adonai Mitchell’s status uncertain in latest Jets injury concern

The Jets have a new injury concern at an already razor-thin position.

No. 2 wide receiver Adonai Mitchell was limited in practice Thursday with a finger injury.

The Jets are already down rookie wideout Omar Cooper Jr. (high ankle sprain).

Mitchell’s status for Sunday’s game against the Lions is unclear.

Losing him would be a major blow. Mitchell is off to a strong start, with nine receptions for 123 yards.

Garrett Wilson and return specialist Isaiah Williams are the other two main options.

Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq could see an expanded role if Mitchell is out.

Earlier this week, the team signed undrafted rookie Malik McClain to the active roster.

He had been on their practice squad. Former Giants receiver Sterling Shepard is currently on the practice squad.

Last season, the 33-year-old Shepard caught 39 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown in 13 games with the Buccaneers.

The Jets forced five fumbles Sunday but recovered only one of them.

Defensive coordinator Brian Duker believes as long as they continue to create opportunities, the results will follow.

“Largely just weird bounces — that’s how it goes sometimes,” he said. “There are some techniques we emphasize, like pouncing on the ball rather than trying to scoop and run with it, but overall I was comfortable with our technique on those fumble-recovery opportunities.”

Breece Hall studies a lot of the league’s top running backs, and he will face one of them Sunday in Lions star Jahmyr Gibbs.

But the two are different — Hall admitted he lacks Gibbs’ game-changing speed.

“It’s fun to watch him, see how explosive he is,” Hall said. “He’s one of the best backs in the league. I respect his game a lot. I admire people who are talented.”

Running back/kick returner Kene Nwangwu (back), TE Mason Taylor (thumb), safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (groin) and LB Kiko Mauigoa (quad) all didn’t practice again.
