At Sportmax SS27, poise meets a little bit of edge

The Sportmax SS27 show displayed a palette so tightly wound it felt almost monastic—ivory, sand, oat, chocolate brown, charcoal and black, with barely a note of colour allowed to intrude. It set the tone perfectly for the house’s proposition of SS27 ready-to-wear: restrained maximalism, where the volume is turned up on proportion while the volume is turned down on everything else. Because while other houses might be shouting through colour, Sportmax is whispering through construction.

This was most clearly felt in the show’s tailoring, where funnel collars ballooned around the neck and shoulders squared off into architectural points, and sleeveless coat vests sat stiff and structured over the body. Trousers and skirts, by contrast, were left to pool and drag at the ankle—wide, weighty, and almost liquid in how they moved, setting up a tension between hard tailoring up top and soft, oversized volume below.

Fabric also played its part in that push-pull. Crisp wool gave the coats and blazers their sculpted edge, while sheer organza and chiffon overlays—worn over tailored pinstripe suiting or slip dresses—added a translucent, undone quality that softened the formality. Leather made its own case in full blazers and hooded jackets, lending certain looks a tougher, more graphic edge, with the occasional jolt of red or tangerine orange allowed through—the asymmetrical lapel here, a body-skimming jersey dress there—used sparingly enough to read as punctuation rather than a pattern.

A crisp white shirt was knotted low around the waist like an improvised belt; a pinstripe blazer was worn wrapped rather than buttoned. And the accessories carried their own quiet drama: sculptural metal collar necklaces sat close to the throat, drawstring pouch bags in leather swung from long cords finished with wooden toggles, and sandals—flat or low-heeled—came trimmed in fur or fashioned from clear PVC straps. Because even in a collection built on restraint, Sportmax still knows exactly when to let its hair down.
