Hyderabad: A 10‑day training course on near‑surface geophysical techniques and their applications began at the CSIR‑National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR‑NGRI) in Hyderabad on September 21, with 22 participants from universities across the country attending.
The course, conducted under the CSIR‑Integrated Skill Initiative, will continue till September 30 and aims to provide theoretical knowledge and hands‑on training in geophysical methods, equipment and data analysis. The inaugural session was held at the e‑classroom of CSIR‑NGRI in the presence of institute director Dr Prakash Kumar, CSIR‑Integrated Skill Initiative chairman Dr E. V. S. S. K. Babu, Scientist‑G and Head, HRDG, and course coordinator Dr D. Mysaiah, Scientist‑F, along with faculty and participants.
Dr Mysaiah said the programme would provide exposure to advanced techniques, field work, practical applications and equipment demonstrations. The training covers passive methods such as gravity, magnetic, electromagnetic, magnetotelluric, self‑potential and induced polarisation, and active methods including shallow seismic refraction and reflection, multichannel analysis of surface waves, ground penetrating radar and geophysical well logging.
Participants will also be introduced to airborne and drone‑based methods and seismic source equipment, including Mini and Hemi‑50 Vibroseis systems. Field demonstrations will include installation of seismological networks and micro‑earthquake stations, data acquisition at different locations and processing of real datasets. Dr Prakash Kumar said such programmes help build a workforce with scientific and technical competence, while Dr Babu stressed the importance of capacity building through hands‑on training and field exposure.
