OOTY: While the theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is ‘Digital agenda and Artificial Intelligence to redesign tourism’, tourism stakeholders here have called for evolving new era plans to make the tourism department have a say in the local body plans to redevelop as well as improve the tourism infrastructure facilities in the Nilgiris.
N. Chandrasekar, former secretary of the Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association, said as the United Nations tourism sector stated tourism over the centuries evolved and developed through innovation, creativity, inclusion of time-related technologies. Now, in this cyber era, wherein the digital platform is unavoidable, AI, which is reshaping and redefining technological advancement in the world, is all set to become the next major transformation tool for the tourism industry world over.
The travel and tourism industry will have to go through all the avenues available before it to explore how AI shall help pave the way for smarter, inclusive, time-saving, sustainable and responsible tourism by improving the decision-making and required skills in the tourism industry and to look and plan for improving the ways through which tourism destinations are experienced, enjoyed and managed as tourism industry plays a major role in tourism-linked economy to roll on.
“In fact, the AI phenomenon has begun to help travel plans, choosing destinations that in fact would give necessary data on how the tourism industry operates and to plan for how to improve and reshape it in tune with technological advancement. AI in the tourism sector is expected to fortify small business interests, livelihoods, improve the service and show the avenues for new opportunities to explore. The government should help the stakeholders in the tourism industry in the Nilgiris, a land of tourism, to invest in digital skills, make the AI-driven tourism agenda to improve tourism, tourism workers, local communities whose livelihood rely on tourism and to popularise the emerging destinations and also to connect with the local civic bodies to improve and redevelop the tourism infrastructure to provide world-class toilet, road, pavement, parking facility and restaurant facilities to make tourism enjoyable in the Nilgiris, Chandrasekar suggested.
Meanwhile, residents across the Gudalur and Pandalur taluks in western Nilgiris, bordering Kerala and Karnataka, want the Central and state governments to evolve plans to develop tourism in the western Nilgiris by laying a public garden, boating facilities and adventure tourism in the tea gardens to charm the tourists to western Nilgiris which will help reduce congestion in Ooty and Coonoor in the upper reaches of the Nilgiris and make the tourists enjoy the different natural terrain and the enjoyable warm weather and Nature in western Nilgiris, known for its spices wealth, woods, wildlife and rural tourism attractions.
