Jack Sock is best known for his accolades on the tennis court — namely, three doubles grand slam titles — but his abilities on the golf course shouldn’t be overlooked. Even with tennis being his main focus, Sock has managed to whittle his handicap on the golf course down to near scratch.
Much of that success on the golf course can be attributed to his prodigious clubhead speed. On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar, co-host Drew Stoltz revealed that a few years back, Sock was clocked on Trackman with a clubhead speed of 135 mph.
“The swing speed stuff I think comes from tennis,” Sock said. “I’m not trying to swing hard. I’m not standing over the ball saying, ‘I’m gonna go after this one.’ But my forehand in tennis was known for racket speed, so I think that naturally came over to golf.”
A clubhead speed over 130 mph is pretty serious stuff. Even among the top pros on the PGA Tour, 135 mph of clubhead speed would turn some heads on the range.
But while massive clubhead speed is certainly an asset on the course, controlling the golf ball when swinging that fast can be a bit of a challenge at times.
“As you guys know, I can put it in someone’s backyard,” Sock said. “I’ve definitely dialed it in more just trying to play a cut, which I feel like I can control more. But the swing speed, clubhead speed can get up there.”
