Scotland were held to a goalless draw by Slovenia in the Nations League on Saturday afternoon, despite creating several good chances in the second half, with Jan Oblak producing a series of saves to keep the hosts level.

Slovenia started the game with more of a threat in the final third and had an early opportunity when Danijel Sturm’s cross found Andraz Sporar, but the striker missed from close range.

Scotland gradually settled and had their best chance of the first half shortly before the interval. Robbie Ure’s left-footed effort from outside the box struck the right post after good work from John McGinn.

Aaron Hickey also saw an effort blocked after being picked out by Oli McBurnie, while McGinn had a header blocked following a cross from Andrew Robertson.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, with the scores level at 0-0 at half-time.

Scotland step it up in second half

Scotland began the second half with greater attacking intent and quickly put Slovenia under pressure.

Sporar forced Angus Gunn into a save with a header in the 53rd minute, but Scotland then created a series of opportunities of their own.

Stephen Welsh fired wide following a set piece before Billy Gilmour tested Oblak from the left side of the box. The Slovenian goalkeeper got down to make the save, and he was called upon again moments later.

McBurnie headed just wide from Robertson’s cross in the 62nd minute, before Jack Hendry saw another header saved by Oblak.

Scotland continued to push and Kieron Bowie was introduced for Robbie Ure in the 67th minute. The substitute immediately became involved, forcing Oblak into a save with a shot from the left side of the box.

Bowie went close again shortly afterwards, shooting from the centre of the box after a headed pass from Gilmour, but his effort was saved by Oblak.

McBurnie then had another header saved by the Slovenia goalkeeper in the 73rd minute, as Scotland’s pressure continued.

Late push is fruitless

The visitors made another change when Ben Gannon-Doak replaced Hickey in the 78th minute, and Scotland continued to search for the breakthrough.

McBurnie’s shot from the left side of the box was blocked after a headed pass from Lewis Ferguson, while Stephen Welsh fired over from outside the box.

Scotland’s best late opportunity came when Gannon-Doak’s delivery found the Tottenham man inside the six-yard box, but Robertson’s header was blocked.

Neither side could find a winner during the closing stages, and the match finished 0-0 after two minutes of added time.
