Hyderabad:Ever wondered how much of a mobile phone comes from beneath the Earth? Rocks and minerals that eventually find their way into mobile phone components were among the exhibits that drew visitors at the CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) Open Day in Hyderabad on Saturday.
Scientists also demonstrated how earthquakes are recorded and analysed, groundwater resources are mapped and monitored, and mineral and other natural resources are explored.
A live 3D visualisation of magnetotelluric techniques showed how variations in the Earth’s natural electromagnetic fields help scientists identify electrically conductive structures beneath the surface. Other exhibits explained the formation and evolution of the Earth over geological time.Around 5,000 people, including students from schools and colleges and members of the general public, attended the Open Day, according to the institute. Visitors explored laboratories, observatories and research facilities, interacted with scientists and watched live demonstrations at around 20 thematic exhibits and stalls.
CSIR-NGRI, one of India’s premier geoscientific research institutions under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), organised the Open Day to mark CSIR’s 85th Foundation Day.
The event was aimed at bringing scientific research closer to the public and fostering scientific curiosity and scientific temper, particularly among young people.
