Visakhapatnam:Soon after the heavy rains forecast, Health departments of Parvathipuram Manyam and ASR districts shifted women in their advanced stages of pregnancy from their homes to various hospitals as a precautionary measure.
Authorities checked up their records and decided to shift women, whose delivery had been estimated 15 days later, to the nearby hospitals as a safety measure.
Accordingly, officials shifted to hospitals around 100 women in Parvathipuram Manyam district. The move turned out to be fortunate as 66 of these women delivered babies while remaining in the hospital. One delivery had been through a C section.
Similarly, 30 pregnant women had been shifted to hospitals in ASR district. Of them, two women have delivered their babies so far.
District Medical and Health officer Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi said they took the precautionary step so that the pregnant women do not get trapped in the floods or remain marooned in their villages.
“All the women and babies are normal and healthy. We will send them home after flood water recedes in the villages and roads are safe to travel,’’ said Dr. Vijayalakshmi.
In addition, the Health department has taken initiatives to check waterborne and communicable diseases as well as malaria. Daily, two medical camps are being held under “Mavuriki Malaria” in various villages and anti-larvae operations launched during the monsoon.
Health campaigns have further been launched under Seva Sankalp Abhiyan and Chandranna Uchith Seva. People have been advised to wear clothes with full sleeves, drink warm water, and use mosquito nets to prevent malaria.
