Anthony Russo on Connecting Avengers Endgame: Encore To Avengers: Doomsday

Seven long years later, Avengers: Endgame will be re-releasing in theatres, this time under a new title, Avengers Endgame: Encore. Remembering the hype behind the movie, it was hype unlike anything I had ever felt before. Especially following that epic cliffhanger involving the withering away of our favourite heroes in Avengers: Infinity War.

In a talk with Marvel, Anthony Russo, one half of the Russos, also reminisced about the same with respect to watching the screening on the opening night. He said, “The energy that [night] had. That was really the first sign of it,” Russo recalls. “I knew it was a very unique, important experience just from that first screening.”

The movie is finally back in the theatres, and you get to experience that high once again. And this has excited not only the fans but the filmmaker himself. He said, “The timing of Avengers: Endgame was remarkable in a lot of ways, not the least of which was [that it was] followed months later by COVID.”

He further added. “That changed theater going in such a profound way, as we all know. To be able to see that theatrical experience regain strength and vigour over the years since then has been really important to us and very inspiring. So, the fact that we can go back and bring Endgame to theatres again and tie into that moment before the theatrical experience was disrupted, I think there’s a layer of power in that. I feel very grateful for it.”

But this time, there will also be an inclusion of some additional minutes to help tie the knots between Endgame and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Anthony spoke about how exclusive new footage would be part of Avengers Endgame: Encore. He said, “We weren’t going to mess with what that movie is,” And while doing that, he refrained from messing with any of the scenes from the original movie. He continued, “Instead, the new scenes add depth to the Avengers’ story while teasing what’s ahead in Doomsday.”

Even while making Endgame, the Russos made sure not to focus too much on the past movies and kept the focus on the future phases of the franchise. The Russos are striving to bring back the same emotional weight to Avengers: Doomsday, similar to Avengers: Endgame. They understand the history of emotions connected to the MCU lingering in the minds of the fans. So, they wish to do justice to it.

He said, “Audiences are coming to Avengers: Doomsday with a lot of emotional connection to prior experiences within the MCU,”. He further continued, “And we have those same emotional connections. So, we want to honour that and figure out how we are using that value and that emotional investment to go somewhere new.”

With Avengers: Doomsday releasing on December 18, 2026, there is a lot to look forward to and rev up the hype.
