Star Wars is a generational fan favourite franchise, having opened its curtains back in 1977, starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. The visionary, George Lucas, began the journey with a trilogy focusing on the story of the chosen one, and thereafter a deep universe was born.
While the original Star Wars movies are narrated within nine theatrically released movies, a number of spin-off shows have released on OTT platforms. The last Star Was theatrical release for it was in 2019, titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Jon Watts will be the latest name to take the helm of directing a Star Wars movie, joining the likes of the greats. These include J.J. Adams and Rian Johnson, who directed Star Wars episodes 7 to 9, Irvin Kershner for episode 5, Richard Marquand for episode 6, and the creator of the universe himself, George Lucas, for the first four episodes.
Jon Watts, famous for directing Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and co-creator of Skeleton Crew (2024), will be joining forces with Simon Kinberg, who will serve as the writer for the film. Simon is best known for writing various Star Wars, X-Men, and Sherlock Holmes and also for producing many other highly acclaimed movies.
The new Star Wars movie will reportedly continue the saga with Episode X following right after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While episodes 7 to 9 were huge commercial hits at the box office, the fans are not welcoming to the fact of considering them canon to the franchise. Time will tell if the Force will be strong with Star Wars Episode X.
