Elementary school students from across the Kansai region gathered in Osaka to share creative ideas for building a sustainable city, with proposals ranging from replacing waste incinerators with mushroom-growing facilities to preserving Osaka’s distinctive local shopping culture.
The workshop, titled “World Children’s Future Conference Supporting the United Nations in Osaka 2026,” was held at Grand Front Osaka under the theme “A Sustainable Future for Osaka.”
Elementary school students from the Kinki region were divided into small groups and encouraged to develop innovative proposals with guidance from university student supporters.
One participant suggested eliminating waste incineration plants and transforming the land into environments where mushrooms could flourish and help break down discarded waste.
The top prize went to a group that proposed protecting Osaka’s distinctive local shops and preserving the city’s traditional shopping culture for future generations.
The winning group earned the right to participate in the national World Children’s Future Conference Supporting the United Nations, scheduled for March 2027.
