The competition for the Rangers’ backup goalie spot has been decided — and it comes with a risk.
The Blueshirts intend to put goaltender Dylan Garand and forward Taylor Raddysh on waivers Sunday, according to The Post’s Mollie Walker, and the first move signifies that Joonas Korpisalo will serve as the No. 2 behind Igor Shesterkin this season.
There’s a chance that another team could claim Garand and the Rangers lose him for nothing, but it’s a risk they’re accepting with the thought that the 24-year-old has more developing to do — and that No. 1 goalie reps could help with that.
If Garand clears waivers, he’d be in line as the top goaltender for AHL Hartford.
Raddysh skated in 68 games for the Rangers last season and collected 19 points, but he served as an extra forward rotating in throughout training camp while competing with Matt Rempe and Jaroslav Chmelar for the final forward spots.
And in an ominous sign, Raddysh was one of the players — along with Garand and defenseman Scott Morrow — left out of the official game group that traveled to UBS Arena for what essentially served as a dress rehearsal in the preseason finale.
