In a new podcast interview Coleen Rooney has laid bare her life including her marriage, devastating loss and the toll the Wagatha Christie court case took on her
Coleen Rooney says she believes marriage “doesn’t have to be forever” despite sticking with husband Wayne through his bad behaviour. The 40-year-old says her faith suggests you should stay with the same partner but she doesn’t not agree and would walk away from Wayne if she was totally unhappy.
She also confirmed that she and Wayne had never tried counselling despite having issues down the years of their 24 year relationship. Coleen says: “I’m a Catholic and that is a Catholic way of, you know, you’re married for life… But there’s situations that happen in a marriage that break that marriage and people – why live in an unhappy marriage when you don’t have to?
“So I am open to that whole marriage world where, even though you’ve taken that vow, it doesn’t have to be forever. You want it to be forever but it doesn’t always work out. And there’s been times in my life where I’ve got to a point where I think, ‘Oh God, is this working, or can we work at it?’
“And we’ve never gone to couples counselling. And still, you know, we are at a really good point in our lives now and I do think that is because we know our roles in the household now.”
The comments on the We Need To Talk podcast follow on from similar thoughts she expressed in their new Disney+ series The Real Rooneys. In one episode of the series after she has rowed with Wayne over his drinking and partying, she said: “There’s times where I think ‘Is the answer to see what it’s like if we were separated?’.”
She then adds: “But the we still care for each other, we still have good times. You know, we still love each other.”
Wayne has also cheated on her over the years with other women, but in the podcast chat, Coleen says on standing by him: “That they are my decisions and it’s my marriage. It’s not for anyone else to judge. I’m the one living in the situation, in that relationship. What right have they got to judge me when I am living it? They’re not living with me.”
Elsewhere in the We Need To Talk podcast, Coleen also tells host Paul C Brunson about her struggles in life which have includes a miscarriage before the birth of her first son and the Agatha Christie court case. She described the period in court against Rebekah Vardy as the worst of her life.
Coleen explains: “During that period, I would say it was probably the worst time of my life. Obviously I’ve gone through grief, I’ve gone through relationship problems, but I could take control of the situations… whereas this was out of my control.”
In a lighter moment, Paul also gave her a handwritten letter from her husband Wayne, who she married in 2008 after meeting as a teenager.
Coleen became emotional after reading the note, with former footballer Wayne writing: “Coleen, this is just a reminder to you, because I know I don’t always tell you: I am so proud of what you have achieved in the last couple of years since going back to work. I know it can be tough at times juggling everything, but you have done it brilliantly.
“More importantly, I am so grateful and appreciative of everything you do for me and the boys. You deal with a lot to make sure everything is done and in place for us all, which makes our lives so much easier. I love you. We all love you.”
After reading it, Coleen said: “I am getting, like, a little bit emotional there, but yeah, that is, it’s so nice, and I said this, I really say it when you know you are appreciated, and I know I am, but I don’t always get told that.
“My life is my family. And I think that goes down to not being always confident in situations where I’m on the front foot, because I always put myself at the back of the line, because I always put them in front of me. And sometimes, just little reminders like that, where you think, you know, you should embrace those moments and you do deserve to be in that situation.”
Wayne appears to have smartened up both his looks and his behaviour in recent months. He has undergone a makeover and lost weight and stopped drinking.
When promoting The Real Rooneys series it has been notable that he looks in great shape and is also spending more time with his family and Coleen. Coleen says: “Wayne’s back. He’s now stepping in full time. He’s never been there before.”
