Steven Bartlett was in Australia for a speaking event when he spearheaded efforts to ensure a young man hit his charity total
He is one of Britain’s most famous entrepreneurs – but Steven Bartlett has shown a softer side to his character during a speaking event in Australia.
The Dragons Den star was talking alongside American author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins – when he was made aware of a young man in the audience.
Lumore Bullmore’s had lost his father when he was just 12 – so to raise money for a suicide awareness charity, he had vowed to cycle from Australia’s Gold Coast to Sydney – a gruelling 1,000km (621 miles) journey – in just eight days. His goal was to raise AUS $1,000 (£530)and finish the trip by attending Bartlett and Robbins’ conference.
Despite detailing his fund-raising trip on Instagram, he had only raised AUS $390 (£207) of his modest AUS $1,000 (£530) goal by the time he arrived in Sydney. However, unbeknown to him, a friend of Bartlett’s had seen his Instagram posts and had made the Diary Of A CEO host aware of Bulmore’s charity bike ride – and that he would be in the audience.
And to his total shock – Bartlett invited Bullmore on stage. A source said: “It was absolutely fantastic. Lumore had no idea that Steven even knew about his fundraising. So to then be invited to join Steven and Tony on stage was, frankly, amazing.”
As well as applauding Bullmore for doing the gruelling cycle ride – Bartlett and Robbins immediately pledged AUS $10,000 Australian (£5,300) each and told Bullmore: “You’re amazing! Keep going.” And, as well as the cash, the spotlight immediately helped Bullmore’s fundraising effort explode.
Within 20 minutes of the appearance on stage – Bullmore had raised AUS $45,000 (£23,885) – smashing his target. And to date, he is now up to AUS $73,791 (£51,876) – after Bartlett shared details of the fundraiser on his social media as well.
A source close to Bartlett said: “Steven’s absolutely delighted he and Tony have been able to help Lumore’s fundraising – but all the credit should go to Lumore. He’s a hero.”
