Bronny James has revealed there was surprisingly little discussion between him and his father, LeBron James, before the NBA superstar left the Los Angeles Lakers for the Philadelphia 76ers.
LeBron consulted other members of his family before deciding to leave Los Angeles in free agency, but Bronny said the pair largely kept their thoughts to themselves as they prepared to go their separate ways.
“We’re men of very little words when it comes to talking about business and what we’re going to do and how we feel about each other. So, it wasn’t really much [discussion] to be honest with you,” Bronny James said Monday at Lakers media day.
“He’s got his own path, and I got my own. He knows that I want to make a name for myself, and I want to continue my career and keep growing as a player. And he knows that I want to focus on that. So, he decided to do that.”
Bronny focused on proving himself in Los Angeles
Bronny spent last season alongside his father in Los Angeles, making history when they became the first father-son pair to appear together in an NBA game.
The two also combined during last season’s playoffs, producing a 10-0 run against the Houston Rockets.
Now Bronny enters a new season without LeBron beside him, with his focus on earning a bigger role within the Lakers rotation.
His $2.3 million contract for the upcoming season is guaranteed, and he played in 42 regular-season games and eight playoff games last year.
Bronny said he has spent the offseason preparing to provide cover behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the Lakers’ backcourt.
He also accepts that his father’s presence will always be part of the public conversation around him, but wants his own performances to define his career.
“You guys know me as Bronny. My real name is LeBron. I’ve been doing this for however long,” Bronny James said. “It’s a motivating factor for me just getting up every day and trying to prove myself as Bronny instead of LeBron.”
Despite the change, Bronny has no hard feelings over his father’s decision and is already looking ahead to the first meeting between the Lakers and 76ers.
Philadelphia are scheduled to visit Los Angeles on Christmas Day, giving Bronny the opportunity to play against his father for the first time in an NBA game.
“I’m happy for him and excited to see where their season goes,” Bronny James said. “I’m excited to see him on Christmas. I’m excited to play against him on Christmas, so that’s going to be good.”
