Mangaluru: Following the Supreme Court’s order for a fresh investigation into the 2012 rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl near Dharmasthala, a march will be held from Ujire to Belthangady on October 10.
Addressing reporters at Ujire activist Mahesh Shetty Thimarody said The incident took place 14 years ago. Following a sustained campaign seeking a fresh investigation, the Supreme Court has now ordered a re-investigation into the case.
Against this backdrop, a five-km foot march titled ‘Nyayada Nade’ will be held from Ujire to Belthangady on October 10, followed by a public meeting where advocates who represented the petitioners before the High Court and Supreme Court would be felicitated.
He said the Chief Minister had a responsibility to ensure that the investigation was conducted fairly.
He welcomed the Supreme Court’s direction to conduct a fresh investigation by keeping aside the officers who had handled the earlier probe.
“Whoever conducts the investigation, it should be fair. Even if a team headed by a police constable conducts the probe, our concern is that we should get justice and the identity of the actual perpetrator should be established,” he said.
The victim’s mother said she wanted the investigation to be conducted properly.
The 17-year-old girl had gone missing on October 9, 2012 and her body was found in bushes at Mannasanka near Dharmasthala on October 10.
