New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard, in a joint intelligence-led operation with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Central Intelligence Agency, intercepted a suspicious Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea, west of Lakshadweep.
According to the Coast Guard, the operation followed intelligence inputs, after which its units detected and tracked the vessel before launching a hot pursuit. The vessel was subsequently boarded and intercepted.
The operation led to the seizure of 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine, estimated to be worth more than Rs.3,000 crore, officials said.
Five Pakistani crew members aboard the vessel were apprehended. The vessel and the crew have been escorted to Mumbai for further investigation by multiple agencies, followed by legal proceedings.
The Coast Guard said the operation was part of its efforts to secure India’s maritime borders and curb transnational drug smuggling and organised crime.
