A star of BBC’s The Repair Shop was left “extremely nervous” at a motoring event after making a “controversial” decision. At Dominic Chinea’s Cornish workshop, his Land Rover Series I restoration appears to be shaping up nicely, with the expert craftsman opening his latest video by starting up the engine and driving the vehicle onto a trailer.
Dominic was bound for the 2026 Goodwood Revival, an annual motor racing event at the Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester in West Sussex, where the team at The Heritage Skills Academy set to work reupholstering his seats.
Dominic explained in a video for his YouTube channel: “They’ve got my Series 1 Land Rover. And over this weekend, they’ve got this slightly ambitious task of reupholstering the entire seats, all of the interior.
“There’s six parts to it. Harry, one of the tutors, is in the workshop now, prepping things. I’ve done all I can to try and prep the actual seat bases and the innards to get everything as ready as possible.
“I have chosen a slightly controversial colour for the vinyl. What colour would you have done it? We’ll see if you agree with what I’ve chosen.”
Dominic had also brought along a bright blue pedal car for entry in the Settrington Cup, the event’s famous pedal car race. But it would need to pass a technical inspection process called “scrutineering”.
After dropping off the car, Dominic headed back to the Heritage Skills Academy for an update on the Land Rover’s upholstery. It was at this point that Dominic’s “controversial” colour was revealed: a deep red.
Dominic gave an interview to the upholsterer, Micaela Sharp, before returning to the other side of the track for the pedal car. He said: “Right, we’re back over the other side of the track.
“And it is time to try and get the pedal car through scrutineering because I’m extremely nervous about it, and I need to know if it’s going to need any work doing. We need to know sooner rather than later.”
Joined by his brother, Dan, Dominic nervously looked on as the rigorous inspection process got underway. Fortunately, though, Dominic’s car passed the test and received a Goodwood Revival sticker.
Dominic was back with the academy the next day, attempting to stitch his own seat covers, followed by the all-important Settrington Cup. A young lad named Leo could be seen pedalling Dominic’s car in the race.
On day three, Dominic was pleased to learn that his seats were finally finished, so he and the upholsterer got to work installing them in the Land Rover, with Dominic noting they were “actually really comfy”.
He added: “I’m so chuffed. Thank you. This is a job that I could not have done. So, I’m so grateful that you’ve done them here for me.”
