Kurnool:Nandyal administration has prepared a ₹986.63-crore action plan for developing horticulture in the district under the Rayalaseema Integrated Horticulture Development Plan (RIHDP), joint collector Suraj Dhanunjay said on Saturday.
He said the main objective of the Rayalaseema Horticulture Hub is to transform the region into a world-class hub for horticulture products capable of competing in national and international markets. The Nandyal action plan would be implemented in coordination with the horticulture, irrigation, roads and buildings, transport, and other departments.
Dhanunjay said the plan aims to increase farmers’ incomes and improve the competitiveness of horticulture products by strengthening post-harvest management, cold storage, transportation, processing, marketing, and other infrastructure. Private investment in the horticulture sector would also be welcomed.
Under RIHDP, the joint collector said, 15 horticulture clusters would be developed across 309 Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) in Nandyal district. The major focus would be on expanding the horticulture area, post-harvest management, and market infrastructure.
An additional 44,640 hectares would be brought under horticulture, taking the overall area under horticultural crops to a significantly higher level. The programme is expected to benefit around 3,19,441 farmers in the district.
Dhanunjay said horticulture production in Nandyal was expected to increase substantially after implementation of the proposed measures. Production, which is currently around 18.36 lakh metric tonnes, is projected to rise to 44.60 lakh metric tonnes, he stated.
