HYDERABAD: Severe headache, body pain in the lower limbs, and mild to high‑grade fever lasting three to four days are among the symptoms being reported by patients with viral fevers as the monsoon season draws to a close, doctors said.
Dr K. Krishna Prabhakar, head of internal medicine at a private hospital, said viral infections were continuing to be reported regularly despite less rainfall compared to last year.
“Cold, cough and fever are lasting for about a week in some patients and they are being treated with antiviral medication. As October begins, we may see more water‑borne infections such as nausea and diarrhoea,” he said.
He advised people to maintain hand hygiene and avoid self‑medication and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, which, he said, could prolong fever.
Doctors at Fever Hospital, Nallakunta, said there had been a temporary reduction in fever cases during Ganesh Chaturthi, but cases increased after the festival ended.
Dr Jalagam Thirupathi Rao, Professor of General Medicine at Gandhi Hospital, said severe headache and body pain, particularly in the lower limbs, were being reported among patients.
“Fevers are ranging from mild to high‑grade. Some patients with repeated fever episodes are being prescribed antibiotics,” he said.
Gandhi Hospital is receiving around 50 to 60 admissions a day, of which 10 to 15 are viral fever cases requiring admission, antiviral treatment and intravenous fluids, he said.
He advised people who develop fever to maintain hand hygiene and wear a mask, particularly while symptoms persist, to reduce the risk of transmission within families.
