In an interview with PEOPLE published on September 30, 2026, Wynonna Judd opened up about her rift with her sister, Ashley Judd. She claimed that she and the actress are currently not “connected.” Wynonna also said that Ashley has not heard her deeply personal album, The Hard Truth, yet. Wynonna explained:
“We’re taking a break, which all families can relate to. She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”
While they are not connected at the moment, Wynonna made it clear that things might not stay the same in the future. The sister duo, who lost their mother, Naomi Judd, after she committed suicide, will “absolutely” reconnect down the line, as per Wynonna. Giving more details about why they are taking a break from one another, the country star said, “She just travels a lot. She’s always gone. It’s nothing specific.”
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that Wynonna Judd has been candid about her relationship with her sister, who has a different biological father. Things between the two have fluctuated over the years, mostly because their family went through some rough times financially during their childhood.
Wynonna once said that Ashley would often be left in her care whenever Naomi used to go out to work. In a 2025 interview, she said, “I raised Ashley. That’s why we have such a funny relationship, ‘cause she calls me ‘sister mommy.’”
She said that even though she recalled the good times with Ashley, she can still remember the times that they went hungry. They made up for it in music, fellowship, and food, so they had what they “needed most of the time.”

However, reports soon emerged that Wynonna and Ashley Judd were butting heads over Naomi’s will. As the rumors started spiraling out of control, Wynonna had to come out and deny all talks of a rift in October 2022. She said:
“I have such a great life. Ashley has a great life. Why would we be fighting over the will?”
Wynonna Judd claimed that, unlike what people assumed, her bond with Ashley was even more powerful after Naomi’s death. This is because they were always vulnerable with each other. She said that even though they disagree on a lot of things as sisters, Wynonna and Ashley were still learning that they have more in common than not.
