Why did Maya Jama split from Stormzy? Celebrity Traitors star hits back at rumours she’s reunited with ex

Maya Jama, TV and radio presenter, will join a host of stars when Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One on Thursday evening

She’ll add another TV credit to her growing résumé when The Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One on Thursday evening.

And in a game of distorted truth, Maya Jama may well be hoping to win over her rivals in much the same way she won over her Instagram followers after playing down recent claims of a reconciliation with former boyfriend Stormzy.

The TV and radio presenter is expected to make a big impact when she joins host Claudia Winkleman and an array of competing stars at Ardross Castle, the baronial 19th century Scottish estate that has been home to The Traitors and its celebrity spin-off since 2022.

But her participation comes after she was forced to play down claims of romance with her grime star ex, more than two years after the former couple confirmed their second attempt at managing a committed relationship was over.

The romance ended platonically amid claims that Stormzy – real name Michael Omari Owuo Jr – was eager to settle down and start a family, while Maya, 32, wanted to focus on building her career as a mainstream TV presenter.

“We tried, and it didn’t work, and that’s okay,” they announced in a joint statement. “We’ve been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we’d be the couple announcing a breakup.

“But for the sake of clarity and, more importantly, to allow us the space and grace that’s needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace, we thought it might be best to.

“We decided to try for the final time in August 2023, and we’ve spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.”

The pair have since refollowed one another on Instagram, with Maya recently sharing a clip of herself singing along to one of the rapper’s tracks. However, the Love Island host insists they are ‘just friends’.

The presenter hit back after a fan posted the clip on X, adding: “I like the song. We have always been friends. No one is back together, rest with the theories.”

The post immediately went viral, clocking up more than 1.7million views as the rap fan replied to her: “It’s a banger to be fair.”

One supporter leapt to Maya’s defence, writing: “People act like just because it’s her ex she can’t like his music, it’s literally Stormzy lol, she would probably be a fan even if they didn’t date.”

Another fan chimed in: “And that’s how you shut down a rumour.” While a third joked: “One Second is how long they took to make up their theories!”

The former couple started dating 2014 after meeting at a Red Bull Culture Clash event, and would go on to officially date from early 2015 before their widely-publicised split in August 2019.

“We were 21 and 20 when we first met – both at the beginning of our careers – and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately, so this final attempt required a whole lot of figuring out, relearning, and unlearning,” they told Instagram followers last year.

“We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we’ve had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends.

“We’re kindly asking for the grace to let both of us keep it moving and not be bothered about it (we highly doubt this’ll work, but we’re still kindly asking anyway). Love you guys and thank you for all the love you’ve showered us with, it’s been beautiful.”

In the wake of their final break-up, Maya briefly entered a relationship with Man City footballer Rúben Dias, 29, before they parted ways in May 2026.

The couple separated mainly because their romance had “run its course” owing to demanding work schedules. According to sources close to them, their professional obligations intensified significantly ahead of the summer, with Maya embarking on a gruelling television filming schedule for Love Island and The Celebrity Traitors, while Ruben’s attention turned entirely towards the World Cup.

Away from reality TV, Maya has also won praise for her role as glamorous criminal fixer Aisha in the second series of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix drama The Gentlemen.
