50-year-old Tennessee woman Christa Pike is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. She became the first young woman in the United States to receive a death sentence. For the unversed, Christa has spent more than three decades behind bars for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemme. According to reports, Christa had been scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026.
However, Tennessee failed to execute the death row inmate after two doses of lethal pentobarbital could not stop Pike’s heart. Now, her final words before the failed execution have been revealed.

On September 30, 2026, Tennessee attempted to execute 50-year-old Christa Pike using lethal injection. For the uninitiated, the then 18-year-old Christa killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemme in 1995. She was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.
According to The Tennesseean, 50-year-old Pike’s execution began at the Tennessee Department of Correction at approximately 8:48 p.m. CT, and officials appeared to administer two doses of lethal pentobarbital. NBC News reported that Tori Gessner, a reporter and anchor at Nashville’s WKRN, said at a news conference that Christa had been heard saying at around 7:34 p.m. local time that her arm hurt. She said:
“My arm feels like it’s about to burst open. Does this happen like that?”
Roane County news reporter Damon Lawrence added that Christa had been asked if she had any final words during the attempted execution. 50-year-old Pike admitted that she had some final words. Pike said:
“I just want to say that I’m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life, and that is with love.”
According to CNN, Damon said Pike had insisted that she was ‘at peace’ and ‘ready to go’. Recalling the moment when Christa was about to be executed, WPLN reporter Catherine Sweeney shared that the 50-year-old Tennessee woman was lifting her head and looking around at one point. Christa reportedly said that there was a spot that was burning and hurting, and asked if that was normal. However, Sweeney noted that none of it was normal.

Before Christa Pike’s attempted execution, her attorneys challenged Tennessee’s lethal injection process and asked that, if the state proceeded with execution, it use hanging instead. Her legal team cited her blood disorder, difficulties with accessing her veins, and her history of trauma, arguing that lethal injection could cause unnecessary suffering.
According to Pike’s attorneys, she received two doses of pentobarbital, but had not lost consciousness. After the execution attempt failed, reporters could still hear Christa snoring even after the curtains were closed around 8:05 p.m. local time. Later, at 8:53 p.m. local time, the microphone was turned off, but reporters could still hear her snoring.
As Pike’s execution went wrong, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stopped all executions in the state for the rest of 2026. He also ordered an independent investigation to find out exactly what went wrong during Christa’s execution attempt. She was supposed to become the first woman Tennessee had executed in more than 200 years.
According to reports, Christa had been accused of luring her victim, Colleen Slemmer, to a remote area of the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus with her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, and their friend Shadolla Peterson. Pike was subsequently convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Currently, she is admitted to the hospital after the failed execution. One of her attorneys told the BBC that Pike was now “being provided life-saving measures” in hospital after two doses of pentobarbital had been administered.
