Germany had Florian Wirtz to thank for a shining display as new boss Jurgen Klopp picked up his first win in charge against Serbia in the UEFA Nations League.
Playmaker Wirtz created Tom Bischof’s first goal for Germany before the break, and then scored a superb solo goal to seal the win.
Klopp had overseen a disappointing start in his first two games in charge but saw a much-improved display after making 11 sweeping changes to the side.
Baryern Munich midfielder Bischof opened the scoring with a clinical finish after Liverpool midfielder Wirtz weaved through the defence and hit the post.
Wirtz had already had a header well saved by Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic in a lively start and he impressed throughout.
Serbia’s best moment came as they went within centimetres of scoring through Filip Kostić and Kosta Nedeljković, who slid and couldn’t connect with a low cross.
Said El Mala came on for Serge Gnabry at half-time, making him the 999th player to feature for Germany, before Wirtz confirmed the win with a crowning moment of class.
Drifting into space inside the area, he took one touch to control a pass from Maximilian Mittelstadt before swivelling inside a challenge and rifling home a superb goal.
The 23-year-old has struggled since moving to the Premier League but has undoubted quality and showed his very best in the touch and finish.
Germany, who had 32 shots on goal by full-time, now move onto four points in their Nations League group with a trip to Greece coming up this weekend.
