Christa Pike Is In Critical State After Two Lethal Injections, 'Seven Needles Used In Left Arm...'

The execution of Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, took an unexpected turn when it was paused after two failed attempts. The 50-year-old female survived an attempted lethal injection after two doses of pentobarbital were administered to her. Her lawyer recently called the botched execution ‘cruel’ and ‘torturous’.

Now, as per the latest update, after the two lethal injections, the Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is said to be in a critical condition and is ‘receiving life-saving care’ at a hospital. The botched execution led the state’s governor to halt all executions for the year. Speaking about Pike’s condition, her lawyer, Randy Spivey, told reporters that Pike is alive but is ‘critical’.

Pike’s lawyers offered more details about the failed execution and revealed what exactly happened. The lawyers called it a ‘harrowing scene’ and revealed:

“Last night, the execution team attempted to establish an IV line for an hour. I counted at least seven needles used in her left arm alone, one of which appeared to be bent when it was pulled from her arm after an unsuccessful attempt.”

Pike’s lawyer, Randy Spivey, also said that observers were kept in a dark room behind a closed curtain. After the second dose was administered, Pike was still breathing. Observers had no idea when the process began. After the failed execution, Pike’s lawyers are now asking for her sentence to be commuted. Another of Pike’s lawyers said they were looking into other legal options and also wanted Pike’s input.

All about Christa Pike’s crime and execution

In 1995, one of the most horrendous murders took place near the University of Tennessee campus. The victim was 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, and the convict was her classmate, Christa Pike. She attacked Colleen, believing she was interested in her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Due to the romantic rivalry, Pike, then 18, and her accomplices lured 19-year-old Slemmer to a secluded wooded area on the campus and murdered her.

Christa turned on Slemmer and began assaulting her. The assault continued for 30 minutes to an hour, even though Slemmer tried repeatedly to run away. Slemmer had over 300 lacerations on her body, strange (reportedly Satanic) symbols carved deep into her chest, and a crushed skull with a piece taken away by Pike as a souvenir. When she was convicted, she defended her accomplices, admitting she was the actual killer.

Her boyfriend, Tadaryl, also confessed that he had helped in the attack. Prosecutors claimed jealousy was one of the leading factors behind the confrontation. After her arrest, officials said that Pike felt no remorse for her act, and it took her years to finally understand the gravity of what she had done.

Her attorneys have asked Tennessee officials to reconsider the death sentence, citing her young age at the time of the crime, her childhood abuse, mental health, and the circumstances surrounding her original trial. Her lawyers also pointed out that Pike allegedly experienced severe sexual abuse, violence, and neglect throughout her childhood. However, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee denied Pike’s clemency request.

Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, who was among those who wanted the execution to take place and who traveled to Tennessee to witness it, told NBC News after the botched attempt that “it was a mess.”
