Actress Felicity Jones, who received Oscar nominations for her roles in The Theory of Everything and The Brutalist, has made a candid admission about why she chooses certain roles despite her success

Felicity Jones has admitted she still has to think about finances despite her huge career in Hollywood.

The actress, 42, has had a glittering career in film for years, and received an Academy Award nomination when she starred as Jane Hawking, the wife of Stephen Hawking, opposite Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything.

Since then, she has starred in acclaimed films like The Midnight Sky, Dead Shot and received her second Oscar nomination for The Brutalist in 2024. Felicity will soon be seen as legendary mystery author Agatha Christie in Eleven Missing Days – but has revealed that she is forever taking jobs on based on what they can do for her in a “practical” sense.

Asked about how she chooses what she does in her career now, she said: “It’s creative but also I’ve got to pay the bills so it’s practical and I’m constantly negotiating those things. But you’ve also got to feel that what I’m doing has got to spark something in you, this is the right thing. It’s one of those funny thing. You read something and it clicks.

“It’s a gut thing, but like everyone, it’s practical as well. You’ve got to make the best decisions you can with the circumstances you have but I know when I’ve read something and engaged by it.”

Felicity first found success as a teenager when she was cast as Ethel Hallow on The Worst Witch, which aired on CITV from 1998 until 2001. The series was based on the book series by Jill Murphy, and followed the ups and downs of clumsy witch-in-training Mildred Hubble (Georgina Sherrington) at Cackle’s Academy.

The cast was made up of of a host of names from the acting world including Una Stubbs, Jessica Fox, who would go on to star as Nancy Hayton in Hollyoaks, and theatre actress Clare Coulter, who would later find huge television success with roles in Fargo, Star Trek and Severance.

Felicity only stayed for one series and was then replaced by Katy Allen, who would later go on to appear in Casualty and EastEnders, but when asked by co-star Holly Rivers on the Cackles’ After Dark podcast whether that early role bothered her as her career started to take off, she insisted that was not the case.

She said: “I loved it. I loved doing it. I really enjoyed shooting it and made great friends and I’m so fond of it. I’d read the books and listened to the audio cassettes on car journeys so I was a fan.

“It’s part of the reason I’m acting now and realising how much I loved it. I do still love it, I love it more than ever, interestingly. I’ve actually stopped stressing about it.”

When it comes to her approach to acting now, Felicity, who appeared in The Archers, The Diary of Anne Frank and Doctor Who before finding global success in mainstream film, insisted she has a far more relaxed attitude about it now than she ever did.

“When you’re younger you overthink things. I started off in some ways coming at things very naturalistically and wanted to have that naturalism but I’ve also liked wearing wigs, exploring and creating something different from myself.

“And I love the psychology of people so I love the research and finding out about characters, how psychology affects behaviour.

“I love people from all over the world, all different walks of life, and I love it. I wouldn’t necessarily have said that 10 years ago. I think you just find your way of working that works and it’s a joy.”
