Initially, on the night of December 31, 2015, he had asked his mother, Durga Thakkar, to join him to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens at a nearby mall. However, she refused because she was tired. Eventually, he borrowed Rs. 500 from her and left to watch it alone.
Later, around 1 a.m on January 1, 2016, Vishal sent a text to his father. In the message, he told him that he was going to a New Year’s party. So, he would return the next morning. According to news reports, the actor did spend the night celebrating with his friends and returned to Mumbai the next day. However, Vishal never came back home. Since then, his disappearance has become one of the biggest puzzle missing-person cases involving a TV actor.
It was also revealed that Vishal reportedly met his girlfriend, TV actress Rajani Rathod, on January 1, 2016. In fact, they went back from a resort near Ahmedabad and stopped at a hotel on Ghodbunder Road in Thane to have some tea. She told the police that Vishal seemed normal during the meeting. Before leaving, he also shared that he was going to Andheri for work-related commitments. So, he would take an autorickshaw.
Since Vishal never returned, Rajani became the last person to see him. Once he disappeared, police questioned her extensively during the initial phases of the investigation. But eventually, they found no inconsistencies in her statement. Therefore, they had to rule her out as a suspect.
For those who don’t know, the months leading to Vishal’s disappearance were reportedly difficult. Earlier in October 2015, Rajani had filed a police complaint where she accused him of rape and assault. In turn, he was arrested, and the case got significant attention.
Still, they later resolved the dispute, and the actress withdrew the complaint. However, the damage to Vishal’s personal and professional life was already done. People close to him had mentioned how the incident left him emotionally distressed and affected his career, reducing work opportunities.
The investigators examined whether the incident had any role in his disappearance. However, when they checked his phone records, financial transactions, hospital records and other clues, they could not understand what happened.
Vishal had reportedly shared his final Facebook post at around 12:10 p.m on January 1, 2016. After that, his mobile phone was switched off, and it has never been traced to date. Incidentally, Rajani Rathod herself passed away after a few years due to a heart attack.
