“We are using our own hands to clean the poison people throw away.”
What started as a few people cleaning their surroundings has grown into a community movement. Since 1 September 2018, Vinay Das and his team have worked every Sunday without stopping. More than 1,600 children and young people have joined, with around 350 active volunteers.
Together, they have cleaned parks, lanes, the Yamuna banks and several ghats along a 3-km stretch of the Munak Canal. In just their last two Munak Canal drives, 50 metric tonnes of waste was removed, a figure also recorded in MCD records. They also plant trees and care for the saplings for three months.
But sometimes, the biggest reward isn’t a number. It’s a child saying, “Bhaiya, my lane is clean today. Maa is happy.” Now Vinay has an even bigger dream: to build a school for 1,500 children and teach them to become protectors of the environment.
