Rangers best key offseason trade partner Mammoth for third straight win — suffer troubling injury

The Rangers and Mammoth conducted serious business together this summer, both acquiring a key piece from the other in their July 1 trade.

Vincent Trocheck was in white, black and powder blue instead of red, white and blue.

Sean Durzi had Rangers at a diagonal on his jersey instead of Utah.

This was a mutual test for the two clubs who considered their offseason exchange to be pivotal moves in their respective retools, and the Rangers pulled out a 4-2 win against a speedy and overwhelming Mammoth team.

It was a grinding, physical contest that saw both teams held to single digit shots in each of the first two periods.

Gabe Perreault broke open a 1-1 game just over three minutes into the third period.

Following up on a missed 2-on-1 opportunity from Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere, Perreault buried the rebound for his second goal of the season.

Captain J.T. Miller’s first tally of the season, however, proved to be the game winner.

Vladislav Gavrikov appears to be carrying over his surprise offensive contributions from last season, logging a goal and the primary assist on Miller’s goal.

Three shifts into the game Joseph Veleno went down awkwardly along the boards in a tangle with Clayton Keller.

After struggling to get to the bench, Veleno consulted with a team trainer before he had to be assisted to the dressing room. He didn’t put any weight on his right leg as he made his way.

Of all the positions, a loss at center arguably would be the most troublesome for the Rangers.

The Rangers have Justin Dowling, Glenn Gawdin, Cole Beaudoin, Juuso Parssinen and Dylan Roobroeck as center options in Hartford. Dowling, Gawdin and Parssinen are the only ones among them with NHL experience, and the latter skated on the wing in the Wolf Pack’s first game of the season on Saturday.

Despite going down a player early, the Rangers got on the scoreboard first toward the end of the first period.

Gavrikov, who contributed more offensively than expected last season, wristed one from the top of the zone to open the scoring on the night. On the ensuing faceoff, Utah’s Barrett Hayton shoved Noah Laba over before the puck was even dropped and a melee immediately broke out.

The game got progressively chippier from there, culminating in Will Cuylle crunching Dylan Guenther into the boards head first. The hit instantly caused an intense scrum and the Mammoth earned a penalty out of it.

Just 28 seconds into the man-advantage, Utah’s Nick Schmaltz backhanded a rebound while cutting in front of the crease to even the score at one-all. It counted as the first power play goal the Rangers penalty kill has given up this season.
