The Swan: Behind the Mirror is now streaming on Hulu. However, behind what looked like an “opportunity of a lifetime”, there is a struggle that no one seems to be aware of. Now, Season 1’s Kristy Garza has reflected on her experience during the show and spoken about the emotional and mental cost behind the ‘free’ plastic surgery.
The Swan star, Kristy Garza, reveals what the toughest part about participating in the show was
Kristy Garza recently sat for a conversation with PEOPLE and got candid about the truth behind the “free” plastic surgeries after she landed a spot on The Swan Season 1. What she initially thought was the “opportunity of a lifetime” came with a high emotional and mental cost. She previously talked about it in The Swan: Behind the Mirror, a new documentary directed by Erin Lee Carr that explores the 2004 reality series.
For those who don’t know, The Swan aired just two seasons before ending. Now, during a candid conversation with the media, she recalled what drew her to apply for the show. She explained that she was finishing up her military service when she learned about the Fox reality show. For Kristy Garza, it was a massive opportunity.

Kristy Garza recalled that the show seemed like a “golden ticket,” where she would get a life coach, a therapist, a personal trainer, an esthetician, and a plastic surgeon while becoming “Beautiful”. However, the reality was extremely different from what she had expected. Kristy Garza soon realized that it wouldn’t be easy for her to participate. Even after she was picked, she said a few details still needed to be settled. However, the hardest part of it all was to leave her 3-year-old daughter behind.
Kristy Garza recalled how she had to ask her command to dismiss her from the service a month early so she could participate. The Swan fame recalled that she was married when the opportunity presented itself and her husband was stationed three hours apart. Kristy recalled how she was in the “transitional phase” of her life when the opportunity presented itself. She was quoted as saying:
“He was at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, and I was at Fort Irwin near Barstow. But my daughter was 3 years old at the time, and that was really tough. I had been through basic training, so I was like, ‘If I can do that, I can do this’. So I made all the arrangements for my then-mother-in-law to take my daughter, and her dad was super supportive. I was like, ‘Alright, I’m going to go do this. Let’s see what happens.'”

The Swan star, Kristy Garza, gets candid about the emotional cost behind the “opportunity of a lifetime”
In the same conversation, Kristy Garza recalled that while she was necessarily unhappy with her physical transformation, her mental and emotional state was distraught by the end of it. The reality TV star revealed that when it came to her mental health, she believes she left the show worse off than where she began. For those who don’t know, The Swan was a 2004 reality show that featured self-described “ugly ducklings” who underwent extreme physical makeovers via multiple plastic surgeries. Kristy was quoted as saying:
“When I signed up for this show, I didn’t really lack confidence in my abilities or my intelligence or being a mom or a wife at the time. And the show, just whatever little self-esteem I had, it took it all away. I ended up getting evicted from my apartment. I ended up getting divorced. I started drinking a lot. I used drugs. I felt the void of any esteem.”
While she “was happy with the plastic surgery,” it led to its own set of issues. Kristy Garza revealed that when women struggle with self-esteem, they often try to over-sexualize themselves, because their mind cannot healthily differentiate between positive attention and negative attention. She admitted that she became “consumed with just debauchery”. Kristy recalled how, despite looking physically stunning, she was left with “all this shame” and said:
“I think that goes to show that my mental health was devastated. And so, when people are like, ‘Oh, you got all this free.’ Nothing is free. Everything has a price. I paid with my pride, and I paid with my mental health. And I lived with that my whole life, with this shame. I wasn’t a good mom. I wasn’t a good sister. I wasn’t a good wife, and it was because I didn’t like myself.”
