Lanterns Season 1 has come to an end, and fans are already excited for Season 2. While the viewers were eager to know what comes next, the lack of details had made them nervous about the series ending with Season 1. However, now the True Detective-inspired sci-fi series Lanterns’ Season 2 has officially been confirmed, and here’s what you need to know.
Lanterns Season 2 confirmed by co-creator Damon Lindelof
The HBO series starring Aaron Pierre as ‘John Stewart’ has finally drawn close to its first season. However, while the tumultuous relationship of ‘John’ and ‘Hal Jordan’ (Kyle Chandler) is over, the story is nowhere near done. The series has drawn immensely positive reviews from fans and critics alike, and now the makers have confirmed that Season 2 might not be as far away as they had imagined.
For those who don’t know, Season 1 brought the mind-bending mystery to a close, with ‘John’ solving the mystery behind ‘Hal’s’ murder and finally accepting his role as Earth’s ‘Green Lantern’. He accepts the role, despite ‘Guy Gardner’ (Nathan Fillion) having the official title. What’s even more interesting is the fact that ‘John’ is using an unauthorized lantern battery created by ‘Sinestro’ (Ulrich Thomsen).

While this might have brought ‘John’s’ origin story to an end, there is a lot more in store. While talking to Collider, Damon revealed that Lanterns Season 2 is in the early stages of development. He added, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” when asked about continuing ‘Hal’s’ story even though he is dead. Damon Lindelof further revealed that the series has yet to receive an official renewal from HBO.
However, the fact that a preliminary writers’ room has opened suggests that the possibility of its return is very real. He admitted that while killing ‘Hal’ was brutal on the fans, the creative team felt that faking his death would have been cheap and dishonest to both the character and its fans. Talking about the possibility of ‘Hal’s’ return, he said:
“I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on ideating on Season 2, felt like even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, ‘Oh, he was a clone’ or ‘He’s only mostly dead’ in the Princess Bride vernacular.”
What to expect from Lanterns Season 2?
In the same conversation, Lanterns’ co-creator Damon Lindelof confirmed what’s next and reflected on the subject of a potential Season 2. While Lindelof won’t be returning for Season 2, he has asserted that it is happening. However, he claims he does “not know anything” about what the sophomore story could be.

Damon Lindelof further added that in the comics, ‘Hal’ dies several times and there are always ways that his story could continue. However, for now, he doesn’t have any clue how the writers are moving forward. He also commended Kyle for doing an absolutely phenomenal job. He was quoted as saying:
“I do not know anything about the creative, and I wouldn’t want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in. Knowing what the comics have done with Parallax — and Hal, I think, has died at least 3 or 4 times over the course of the canon, and celebrating everything that Kyle did in his performance to get the audience to fall in love with Hal.”
While the team is allegedly busy writing about what will happen in Lanterns’ Season 2, fans might not have to wait for the series to return to see John Stewart again. According to reports, even if Lanterns is not renewed, it has already been confirmed that John will return in James Gunn’s Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow. While Gunn has insisted it’s not exactly a sequel to 2025’s Superman, ‘Clark Kent’ (David Corenswet) and ‘Lex Luthor’ (Nicholas Hoult) will both return to forge an unlikely alliance against the sinister ‘Brainiac’ (Lars Eidinger).
