TV star Melinda Messenger is now embracing her natural grey hair and says she is ‘enjoying the freedom’ of avoiding ‘wobbles’ about her looks – and she looks fabulous
Melinda Messenger has earned plaudits on social media after embracing her natural looks. The 55-year old one was of the most popular pin-up stars in the 1990s and later transitioned into TV work. She became a television presenter and fronted her own shows, including Melinda’s Big Night In and Fort Boyard, before embarking on a career change to become a psychotherapist in 2015.
Melinda took to Instagram on Sunday (October 4) to show off her now-grey hair – something she says she “enjoys” having. In a lengthy post, the former model detailed her “journey so far”, alongside a snap of herself smiling for the camera, showcasing her new look.
“I know not everyone wants to embrace the natural colour and I get that,” Melinda said. “I’ve had many wobbles, used highlights and toners to try and blend it in, and there are no rules, so whatever feels right for you is okay.”
She continued: “But I am enjoying staying with it and I’ve found my hair has never felt healthier. And more importantly for me, I found real freedom and joy in just letting myself be. I think that’s the greatest benefit.
“That and not buying into the conditioning that women are not allowed to age and that beauty is confined to the expectations of those that profit from it.”
The mum-of-three closed with a message to others: “There’s nothing wrong with colouring your hair, embracing your grey, changing your mind or doing whatever makes you feel good. And this feels good for me.”
Writing in response, many women of Melinda’s age were quick to praise her.
One fan penned: “Melinda, your hair is beautiful. Well done, lovely lady. I am on my own grey journey, 10 months in and good so far… I have to agree with you that my hair feels so soft and healthy.”
A second person agreed: “Love this Melinda. I did the same thing about 3 years ago and feel like there are hardly any of us in our 50s who are grey. It’s nice to see.”
A third added: “Really suits you…. I’ve been on a similar journey and after colouring mine every 4 weeks in the end it’s such a freedom to not having to.”
While a fourth declared: “Wonderful. I did it 5 years ago. I’ve never looked back. I love flying in the face of ‘convention’. Who wrote these rules anyway?”
Speaking to Closer magazine in 2024 about life as a middle-aged woman, Melinda exclaimed: “My fifties so far have been bloody brilliant.
“I’ve gone through the stage of being a mother and raising a young family. All my attention in life so far has been about looking after everyone else’s needs. Now it feels like I’m reclaiming my own life. I felt somewhat limited in my 40s.”
She had previously shared that she was overly concerned about others’ opinions, but now embraces self-acceptance, which has enhanced her happiness.
“I’ve got rid of those limitations and shed lots of layers since then,” she explained. “I don’t fear the ageing process at all. If you keep yourself trapped in stages you’ve outgrown, it’s going to feel uncomfortable, so it’s better to embrace it.”
