
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad cybercrimes police arrested a 26-year-old person for allegedly extorting Rs.38 lakh from a 70-year-old retired employee by threatening to inflict in criminal cases.
The arrested person was a native of Palakollu in West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Two mobile phones were seized from his possession.
According to police, fraudsters create fake Facebook profiles in the name of young women and girls. They send friend requests to elderly male persons. After accepting the request, they chat affectionately and gain confidence. They demand money on pretext of household needs, medical emergency, gifts etc.
Later they engage the victim in sexual chats and then blackmail them alleging sexual harassment or exploitation of a minor girl.
In this similar way fraudsters impersonate as police officers and threaten the victim with criminal cases and extort huge amounts.
Accordingly, the accused created a fake Facebook account in the name of a woman and sent friend requests to the victim and after he accepted it, the accused extorted approximately Rs.38 lakh from the victim by blackmailing him with allegations of sexual exploitation of a minor girl.
Based on a complaint, the police booked a case under Sections 66 C, 66 D IT Act and Section 308(2), 318(4), 319(2) of BNS and arrested the accused.
