Soori-starrer Mandaadi is set to move to the digital space following a successful theatrical run. Directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, the Tamil film has emerged as the biggest commercial success of Soori’s career as a lead, with its rooted coastal setting, action sequences and boat-racing portions becoming some of its biggest talking points.
Mandaadi revolves around the traditional sailboat races practised along the Tamil Nadu coastline. Soori plays Muthukaali, a skilled boat racer whose life takes him away from the sport before circumstances eventually bring him back. Suhas plays a key role as his rival, with the story centred on the rivalry between two teams and the high stakes surrounding the annual race.
The cast also includes Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj, Mithun Jai Sankar, Ravindra Vijay, Bala Saravanan and Stun Siva, among others. With the film now completing its theatrical run, it is set to reach audiences on the digital platform from October 8.
The film’s theatrical performance has added another major milestone to Soori’s growing journey as a leading man. The actor, who spent several years as one of Tamil cinema’s most recognisable comedians, has steadily established himself with a series of lead roles, and Mandaadi has taken that progress further at the box office.
A Major Milestone For Soori
On Monday, the makers announced that Mandaadi had crossed Rs 100 crore in India and Rs 150 crore worldwide. The film had already become the highest-grossing movie of Soori’s career in a lead role, making its latest box-office figures another significant achievement.
The film has also received appreciation from several prominent members of the Tamil film fraternity. Vetrimaaran, who worked with Soori in the Viduthalai films and played an important role in the actor’s transition to leading roles, praised the dedication that went into Mandaadi.
Kamal Haasan also met the team following a special screening and appreciated the film, particularly its writing and dialogues. Soori later described his meeting with the veteran actor as one of the most unforgettable moments of his life. Rajinikanth was also among those who praised the team.
Produced by Elred Kumar under the RS Infotainment banner, Mandaadi features music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by SR Kathir and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. The film’s large-scale sailing sequences were among its major attractions, with stunt choreographers Peter Hein, Dhilip Subbarayan and Mahesh Mathew involved in mounting the action.
The boat-racing portions also remain central to the film’s identity, giving the story a strong sense of place while providing the action drama with a distinct visual backdrop. The combination of the sporting rivalry, coastal setting and action helped Mandaadi stand apart during its theatrical run.
For Soori, the film’s success represents another important step in his evolution as a leading actor. After delivering his biggest commercial outing in a lead role, Mandaadi now moves into its next phase, giving a wider audience the opportunity to discover the film beyond theatres.
