She was away from home when her doctor told her over a video call that she had DCIS, a very early form of breast cancer.
Constance Zimmer opens up about her breast cancer diagnosis
A while back, Constance Zimmer took to her Instagram handle to share some pictures of herself. In the second picture, the Boston Legal actress was seen lying on a hospital bed. Along with the carousel, Constance penned a lengthy note wherein she opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis. She shared that on March 13, 2026, when she was away from home, she got a Zoom call from her doctor. The 55-year-old actress mentioned that the doctor told her:
“You have DCIS, also referred to as Stage 0 breast cancer.”

Recalling the moment, Constance said that everything around her seemed to have stopped. Constance mentioned she first called her husband, Russ Lamoureux and told him to take her home. After reaching home, she opened up about her diagnosis to her daughter, Colette Zoe Lamoureux, a.k.a. Coco. She wrote:
“The silence was deafening. Here I was surrounded by women sharing their secrets about their Midlife truths – and I was holding onto the biggest secret I’d ever held.”
Constance shared that the cancer diagnosis was emotionally very difficult for her. She had to meet many doctors, and the situation around her became very overwhelming. Many doctors told her that the quickest option was a mastectomy, which means removing her breast to get rid of the cancerous tissue. However, Constance didn’t want to have her breast removed.
Thus, she wanted to know if there was a way to treat the cancer while saving it. The House of Cards star then spoke to Dr. Kristi Funk, who told her that they could try a lumpectomy. For those unaware, a lumpectomy removes the cancerous lump while keeping the rest of the breast. Constance felt a bit relieved because Dr. Funk was the first doctor who made her feel that her own wishes and preferences mattered.
Constance underwent three surgeries over three weeks, and the treatment was successful. Her cancerous lump was removed, and her breast was saved. She revealed that while she was going through cancer treatment, she was also publicly promoting the TV series, Love Story. At the time, she did not want to make her diagnosis public. Further, in the note, Constance added that after her surgeries, she underwent radiation treatment. She wrote:
“I then followed my surgeries with radiation, while celebrating my Emmy Nomination.”
Constance expressed gratitude for being cancer-free now. Looking back at the past seven months, the actress mentioned that she experienced fear and shock but also happiness and gratitude. She wrote, “I’m grateful to be cancer-free. From hospital gowns to Emmy glamour, this was one hell of a ride.”
