NAHA –
A 20-year-old US Marine arrested over the robbery and killing of a woman at a hotel in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, may have strangled her with the cord of a telephone installed in the room, investigators said.
The 39-year-old woman was killed at the hotel on October 3, and her wallet and other belongings were stolen. US Marine Devin Ballard, 20, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and murder.
Investigators found marks on the woman’s neck indicating that she had been strangled with an object resembling a cord or string, according to people familiar with the investigation.
The receiver of a telephone installed in the hotel room was also found off the hook.
Based on the condition of the room and the marks on the victim’s neck, police are investigating the possibility that Ballard used the telephone cord to strangle the woman.
Ballard has denied the allegations, telling investigators, “I don’t know anything about it.”
